How is BOTOX Cosmetic® used?
A tiny amount of BOTOX Cosmetic® is injected into the muscle that creates the wrinkle. When BOTOX Cosmetic® is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes, the wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.
Where can BOTOX Cosmetic® be injected?
The most common areas for the use of BOTOX Cosmetic® are the frown lines between the eyebrows, wrinkles on the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes.
Does BOTOX Cosmetic® freeze my face?
No. There is no numbness. BOTOX Cosmetic® only relaxes the overactive muscle underneath the wrinkle. The other elements of facial expression remain normal. You won't notice that it's in your face except by looking in the mirror.
How long does a BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment last?
The effects of BOTOX Cosmetic® usually last three to four months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of BOTOX Cosmetic® may begin to last longer. In some individuals treatments can last up to 6 months.
Does it mean that I will need more injections?
Yes. Injections 2 to 3 times a year are often common to maintain a benefit over a long period of time. The treatment can be repeated for as long as is required.
Are BOTOX Cosmetic® treatments safe?
Clinical studies of over 15 years have shown BOTOX Cosmetic® treatments to be effective and safe.
How do I know my Doctor won't give me too much BOTOX Cosmetic®?
The production of BOTOX Cosmetic® is carefully controlled at every stage to ensure that it is safe for medical use. The Doctor has been trained to administer it safely and to manage any problem that may occur.
Are there any patients who should not receive BOTOX Cosmetic® treatments?
BOTOX Cosmetic® should not be given to pregnant women, nursing mothers or people who are myasthenia gravis or muscle diseases.
Does the injection hurt?
When injected, BOTOX Cosmetic® does not cause irritation or inflammation. Occasionally, patients have complained that the fluid felt like a mild sting. Most patients say that it causes very mild discomfort.
Does your face feel different afterwards?
No. The skin and facial movement feel just the same as before - you won't notice that it's in your face except by looking in the mirror.
Does BOTOX Cosmetic® interact with other drugs?
It is always important to let the doctor know if you are taking other drugs. Certain drugs may increase the effect of BOTOX Cosmetic®. These include aminoglycoside antibiotics, quinine and calcium channel blockers.
How long does BOTOX Cosmetic® take to work?
The effects are usually noticeable in 2-3 days, but it may take up to 10 days to maximize the effect. You will be asked to return 2 weeks after the first treatment so that the Doctor can assess your response. Digital pictures are taken before your treatment and two weeks after treatment.
What are the potential side effects? BOTOX Cosmetic® take to work?
You may notice slight pain, swelling, redness or bruising at an injection site. Some individuals have reported headaches for a few hours afterwards. Very rarely an adjacent muscle may be weakened resulting in a droop of the eyebrow or top eyelid. This can last for a month or more. The droop always resolves. To reduce the risk of this happening, you will be asked to stay upright for 3-4 hours after the treatment and to avoid rubbing the treated area for the same time period.
