Preventative Measures

Exercise - This is vital for overall well being, muscle tone and venous blood flow. If you are standing or sitting for a prolonged period, move your feet and legs intermittently. Avoid high heels or restrictive clothing.

Sun/Heat - Avoid excessive sun and heat. Heat from hot baths, whirlpools, saunas and sun dilates the veins and encourage the development of abnormal veins. Avoid sunburns. Wear sun block, SPF#15 or greater in the sun.

Weight Maintenance - Maintenance of normal weight is of vital importance to reduce the load on the veins.

Compression Stockings - These can be beneficial. These should be put on within half an hour of rising from bed or after elevating your legs for five to ten minutes.

Regular check ups are important to detect new varicose veins and spider veins. This will help you to keep your condition under long term control.
