Causes and Symptoms

Causes of Varicose Veins

The main cause of both varicose and spider veins is genetic inheritance. Other important predisposing factors are pregnancy, excessive heat exposure (ie saunas, hot tubs, tanning), long periods of standing or sitting, obesity and trauma (ie accident or injury to the leg).

Symptoms

Varicose veins can cause discomfort in the legs. Commonly people with varicose veins report aching, throbbing, a burning sensation, night cramps, and a heavy or tired feeling throughout the legs. Pain from varicose veins does not always correlate with the size of the vein. Both small and large veins can produce significant discomfort. In some individuals, varicose veins can result in more serious problems such as swelling of the ankles, ulcers, and chronic skin changes (such as darkened skin, thinning of the skin and a rash).

During your initial consultation the doctor will carefully determine which method of treatment is best for you.
